He Spoke Always for God and of God

When [St. Nicholas of Tolentino] ascended the pulpit, the mere sight of his angelic and austere face captivated the audience and dominated it in such a way that everyone became deeply recollected and silent, as if hanging on his every word. […]

Such was the power of his eloquence that the conversion of a sinner could be considered a moral certainty, provided he could be persuaded to listen to the Servant of God. The return of the most shameless heretics to the true Faith was also a given; it was impossible for them to resist his fiery enunciations that made them flock to him en masse to renounce their dissolute lives and false beliefs. […]

The only passions of this great soul were love for God, for the Church and for souls. Indifferent to himself, despising the glory of the world and seeking only God’s, Nicholas was unconcerned with human opinions. Neither slander, nor insults, nor threats were able to intimidate or stop him: he fulfilled his duty without the least fear, and publicly castigated vice and heresy. Always speaking for God and of God, he was fearful of nothing in the world or the infernal regions.
