Prelude to the Gifts of God

For the soul who trusts in Providence, long waits are the prelude to the great gifts of God, foretelling the fulfilment of the great promises made by the Most High. The patriarch Abraham is an example of this: when he had already reached a hundred years of age, God promised him an uncountable posterity, from which the Messiah would spring.

A son is born, and the Lord commands that he sacrifice him. Abraham trusts. And at the moment of his supreme heroism, after such a long wait, he finally receives the certainty of the divine pledge: “ I will multiply your descendants as the stars of heaven and as the sand which is on the seashore” (Gn 22:17).
